(Mark 11:9, 10 KJV) And they that went before, and they that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna; Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord:10. Blessed be the kingdom of our father David, that cometh in the name of the Lord: Hosanna in the highest.
The word Hosanna has taken on a feeling of one of praise and adoration when in fact it is a cry for help. The word itself literally means “Please save us.” When Jesus rode triumphantly into Jerusalem that first Palm Sunday the people were calling out for deliverance. This week I want to look at the deliverance available to us and how through what Jesus did and continues to do in our lives we can be set free from anything that holds us captive. Before I go any further I think it is important for me to let you know that I am not simply preaching as one who knows but I am a fellow disciple. I have been set free and called to reveal the truth that is in Christ Jesus alone. At the same time I continue to walk this rough road of life and thanks be to God his word ministers to me perhaps even more then to you. I realized this past week as I was preparing the daily devotion that it matters not if anyone else ever reads it, the word of God will not come back void and it changes me everyday giving me that hope of glory, only found in Him. Today I know that there are still some strongholds in my life that I need to be set free from. So as I go through this Biblical formula for freedom I want you to know that it works and it can continue to work as more obstacles surface in your life. The first thing that I have discovered which is crucial to deliverance is the realization that you need it. The word picture that God gave to me to help illustrate this truth is that of a shipwrecked man. In order for deliverance to take place in our lives we must first be aware of the fact that we need it. The shipwrecked person who is unconscious in the water is completely unaware of the danger around him.
The scripture verses that I am going to use for this message on deliverance comes from the 10th Chapter of the book of Romans.
(Romans 10:13-17 KJV) For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach, except they be sent? As it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things! But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report? So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
Throughout the Old Testament the Israelites demonstrate a pattern of the human heart. First being close to God and walking in His blessings. Then slowly turning from Him until they end up in bondage by some foreign power. They then cry out to God and are delivered and once again begin to serve Him. Then the pattern starts all over again as they slowly forget about the things of God and go after their own lusts. The Egyptians, The Babylonians, The Assyrians, the Greeks and the Romans all assailed the Hebrew nation. Sometimes in our own life it may seem as if there are whole armies assailing us. What do you need deliverance from? Do you need deliverance from fear? From worry? Shame, physical pain, financial burdens, depression, bad habits, addictions, strife, confusion, anger…? What ever it is that is holding you down the first step to deliverance is to realize the area of stronghold in your life and cry out to God. For whosoever will call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. And let us not forget just a few verses before this we read that if you will confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead you will be saved. So going back to our shipwrecked friend he must first come to, and cry out. He will not survive if he stays in some dream world where everything is all right. He is floating on a peace of wreckage in shark-infested waters. We have to stop telling ourselves that we are OK. Do you remember that psychobabble book from the 70’s I’m OK, You’re OK? Well the author of that book Thomas Harris shot and killed himself. I guess he wasn’t OK after all. Whatever area in you life needs improvement whether it is something huge and all encompassing or even if it is some slight character flaw God wants to mold you and make you into the very image of His son. That means without a single blot or blemish. We then have to reach out in faith and take hold of the deliverance made available to us through Christ Jesus our Lord.
This is where I am going to start to preach. We need to have faith in the truth. I have heard every type of error in religious teaching. I cannot believe the number of people that follow a lie. Not just a few. I believe that it is because people get so comfortable living their shipwrecked lives that they will not let go of the sinking ship. It reminds me of the monkey who reaches into a jar for some candy then cannot get his fist out of the jar. Rather than let go of the candy he chooses to remain captive within the jar. Let go of the false teachings and search diligently for the truth. Let go of the lies that the enemy has used to keep you captive and reach out for that which is true. Seek and you will find. The truth is real, do not give up on it and do not believe some teacher of mysteries, look into that which has been proven over thousands of years to remain unfailable. Look into the Bible and find true deliverance. Some people have taken that first step and called out to the Lord yet as they reached out for deliverance instead of grabbing onto the eternal life line of Christ they were deceived by some other doctrine and led into even more dangerous waters. Remember satan comes as an angel of light deceiving many. Do not be swayed by every wind of doctrine. The Bible teaches us that in the end times, (and guess what? We are in the end times) that people would turn away from the truth. Read this passage from 2nd Timothy: (2 Tim 4:3 & 4 KJV) For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.
There is only one truth. There is only one way. There is only one God. There is only one life. Sorry, no reincarnation, no former lives, on second chance in the next life. It is appointed unto man once to die, then the judgment. At the white throne there will be two books opened and every one will be judged out of the book. The other book is the book of life. Is your name written in the lamb’s book of life? You have been told the good news of God coming to earth in the body of Jesus. You know that He died upon the cross for your sins. You have heard of how God raised Him from the grave and how he ascended into heaven. Salvation comes from Christ and Christ alone. Reach out to him, letting go of everything that holds you down. The first step towards our deliverance is awareness. The second is faith. Faith is the substance of things hoped for. It is that which we know and trust will see us through. When the Coast Guard arrives upon the scene of the shipwreck and throws a lifeline the stranded passenger can trust that the other end of the line is attached to a firm foundation. You may have reached out in faith in the past to things that were not secure. Sometimes the enemy, that snake, will look like a lifeline when in fact it is full of poison. But when you grasp unto the real thing you know that you are in good hands. But the rescue does not end there. There are others still in the water. The final step in deliverance is to reach out to others and assist them in their struggle. Going back to our scripture in Romans we read that the only way for anyone to believe is if they hear. And the only way that they are going to hear is if someone tells them and the only way someone is going to tell them is if they are called. Guess what? You have been called. You have been appointed and commissioned and assigned. God has already brought people into your life that only you can touch with the lifeline of His love.
The best way to secure your own deliverance is to be the lifeline that pulls others out of danger. It is that blessed assurance that your foundation is strong. When you see other lives being changed by the power of God working through you the joy of the Lord becomes full within you. Remember how the angels in heaven rejoice over one person turning from sin. You can be a part of that celebration by opening up your heart and letting God use you to be a light in the darkness for some other lost traveler. Do you want deliverance today? Do you want to be made whole? Do you want that blessed assurance that all things are working together for the good in your life? Do you want to see the power of God manifested in your life? Start by looking at the things in your life that you need deliverance from. Look first at any unforgiveness that you might be holding unto. Let go of the bitterness, Let go of the pain, it is no longer needed. Reach out in love and believe that God is able to make that which the enemy has meant for evil turn into divine deliverance and abundant living. Let’s close today’s message with prayer. As Jesus rode into the city on that donkey and the people cried out to Him for salvation let us prepare our hearts for the King of Kings to enter in and lead us to new heights of victorious living. Pray with me:
Father God, Thank you for your Holy Spirit, which is like a lighthouse leading us away from the dangers of life and guiding us gently to Jesus. Dear Jesus we reach out to you toady and call upon your name. You are Lord of all and we turn our hearts and lives over to you today. Save us, deliver us, heal us O Lord. We reach out in faith letting go of any and everything else that may have been keeping us afloat. We reach out to you know that there will be change in our lives but it will be for the glory of God. We now ask Lord that as we search our own heart that you reveal to us any areas in our lives that are keeping us from being more effective for you. There are many others that need help in this world. I make myself available to you. Use me this week Lord. Change me that others might see the difference that you have made in my life and be lead also to you. I pray in Jesus name Amen.
