Finding Your Swing

Scripture: (Jeremiah 1:4-12 KJV) Then the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations. Then said I, Ah, Lord GOD! behold, I cannot speak: for I am a child. But the LORD said unto me, Say not, I am a child: for thou shalt go to all that I shall send thee, and whatsoever I command thee thou shalt speak. Be not afraid of their faces: for I am with thee to deliver thee, saith the LORD. Then the LORD put forth his hand, and touched my mouth. And the LORD said unto me, Behold, I have put my words in thy mouth. See, I have this day set thee over the nations and over the kingdoms, to root out, and to pull down, and to destroy, and to throw down, to build, and to plant. Moreover the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, Jeremiah, what seest thou? And I said, I see a rod of an almond tree. Then said the LORD unto me, Thou hast well seen: for I will hasten my word to perform it.

It started by watching a movie and became clear flying a kite. First let me tell you about the kite flying then we'll talk about the movie and finally we might get around to putting the two together and discover what God has for us to learn of Him this week. My wife went to ladies retreat this past week So I took a couple of days off of work to watch the girls and catch up on some work around the house. Somehow I ended up promising Caylie, my seven year old daughter, that we would do something on Friday afternoon since they only had a half day of school. So she ends up devising in her mind the plans for a full afternoon.

There I was- It had been years since I had flown a kite. In fact the last memory I have of even attempting to fly one was just that, an attempt. I remember running and running and running trying to get some air under that kite but there just wasn't enough wind. That day ended in abandon and the kite was left on display for the next year or so until we moved, then it most likely got thrown away.

But Friday afternoon was different. We didn't have much time because of piano lessons later in the day and a birthday party in the evening that we had not yet bought a gift for. So the girls got home from school around 1:00 and we had until 3:00, that was it. Caylie's plans for us were to go to the beach. (something else I hadn't done in a very long time, which is odd seeing we only live a couple of blocks off the water) Well, there were clothes that need to be changed, supplies that needed to be obtained organization, that too often is not even in my vocabulary, that needed to be done. It was a little after 2:00 when we finally got to the beach and put down our blanket. And it was a beautiful day. But with less then one hour to spend, Caylie wanted to build a sand castle, wade in the water and fly kites. The amazing part is she accomplished it all. The even greater part for me was that that kite flew, man did it fly.

At first it was the typical problem of assembling and tying the string. Caylie was having a little difficulty with it but it stayed in the air. I put together the next kite which Rachel ended up flying. It was one of those double string stunt kites. Rachel, who is now 16, had a good touch with it. But Caylie quickly was ready to go onto the building of her sand castle and handed her kite over to me. As soon as she did I let out the string and let that baby take to the sky. It was just as if it was in the movies. I know it was not much time that we were able to spend there on that little beach but sometimes there are moments in life that can last an eternity. Looking up at that kite flying high, with my two girls playing on the water's edge nearby, I realized the greatness of when a kite is really able to fly.

I do not even remember the name of the movie. It starred Will Smith as a golf caddy in the old south. I didn't even watch the whole movie or know the story line for that matter but the magic of truth came through loud and clear. Now, you are going to have to forgive me because I do not know the first thing about golf, nor do I really care to. What I do know is truth when it slaps me in the face. There was this golf match where this young upstart was the hope of Savanna or something and Will Smith was his caddy. Well, this young man had some personal issues or demons of his past that was affecting his game. Then when it came right down to it, when it seemed that all hope was lost, Will Smith's character teaches the young man how to find his swing.

Ok, enough already. What is this all about? flying kites and finding your swing. (Whatever that is.) Well, let's go back to our text for today and look at the encounter that Jeremiah had with God. Look at verse five with me. (Jeremiah 1:5 KJV) Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.

Now stay with me, let's go into the New Testament real quick for some more understanding of where we are headed.

(Ephesians 2:10 KJV) For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

And in the very words of our LORD: (John 15:16 KJV) Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.

I am afraid that you might be missing the point. In the movie, the golfer had to discover that perfect swing that was specific and special in him. The idea that golf is a game that is played, not won, helped in the discovery of the swing that turned a loss into a win.  It is like being there. It is finding your purpose in life and doing it. It is fulfilling your calling in the face of adversity. It is like that kite. It was specifically designed to fly. You, my friend have a perfect swing within you and when you find it you will soar to new and greater heights then you ever dreamt possible.

But there is more and we do not have much time. Going back to the book of Jeremiah we can see something in verse 10 that will help make this more relevant and get us on a more directed path towards our perfect swing. Check this out: (Jeremiah 1:10 KJV) See, I have this day set thee over the nations and over the kingdoms, to root out, and to pull down, and to destroy, and to throw down, to build, and to plant.

The first thing you need to know is that in Christ, your influence is larger then you know. Never forget that all power and authority has been given unto Him and it is He who dwells within you. The second point is the fact that you have been called to be a priest. (1 Peter 2:9 KJV) But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should show forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvelous light:

Now look deeper. You have been called to: 1. Root out. 2. To pull down. 3. To destroy. 4. To throw down. 5. To build. 6. To plant. Do you notice that there is twice as much tearing down and throwing out as there is building up and planting. Look at it again. Now, do you remember my beach experience. It is too often like life in general. Running around trying to get everything accomplished. Meeting the deadlines of time. Going so fast at times that we can almost miss why we are doing it all in the first place. But when that moment comes when you realize the grace of God in your life, all the effort and pain and confusion and suffering becomes nothing compared to the glory of His presence. Walking in His path. Knowing that you are fulfilling a higher calling. It might seem at times to take a lot of work but in reality it is all by the grace of God. It might at times be a battle both physically as well as spiritually but the peace of God is over it all. And it might seem as if we do not know how to find our swing but if we would only believe, only believe and the next thing you know it is there.

I included verses 11 and 12 not only because of the significance to today's message but in the knowledge that it is the rest of the word of the LORD that came onto Jeremiah at this one time. You see, too often we think all of this spiritual exploration and life examination stuff might benefit us in the future. God tells us that it is for today. Verse 11 talks about the olive branch which is the earliest blooming tree in the spring. then God comes right out and tells us that He will hasten to perform His word.

What is your swing? Look down the course of life and stop looking at the obstacles, the sand traps and the rough, look for that flag. Stop running on windless days and find where the Spirit is really moving in your life then catch that wind and soar. I wish I could make it even clearer for you. Within you resides the stuff that worlds were created by. Within you there is perfection. Within you there is that perfect swing. Open your heart up to God, Tear down those walls of doubt, root out that bitterness and unforgiveness. Destroy all the demons of your past that continue to pull you back down and throw down even those little things that throw off your swing. Then build. Build unto the LORD and plant new life. You have been called, ordained of God to bring forth fruit and that your fruit should remain. So now is the time to ask and receive of the LORD.

Now is the time to ask Jesus Christ to fully come into your heart. Now is the time to accept the price that He paid on the cross for your sins. Now is the time to repent of all your sins and turn your life over to God. Now is the time that you ask in the name of Jesus to be baptized in His Holy Spirit. Now is the time to find your swing.
