Death and Life

Scripture: (Proverbs 18:21 KJV) Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.

As if almost a non-stop continuance from last weekís message of As A Man Thinketh, our thoughts turn into words, and within the words the power of the thought is manifested. Now I at first thought that this was going to be a cut and dry message of Biblical affirmations.  If you have ever read any self help type book at all you know the depth of which is placed on verbal affirmations. We all know that there is enough negative energy in the world to discourage even the strongest of men. Wise men have been instructing the verbalization of the positive to overcome the world since men could put words to print. It was about 3,400 yeas ago that Joshua wrote how God had encouraged him to continuously speak the words of God and in so doing he would find prosperity and have success in life. (Josh 1:8 KJV)  This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.

I hope that there is no doubt in your minds that the words we speak, not only represent who we are, but they also determine where we are going. I hope to speak more about this later in the message but I have to cover something very important to our progress. In my study of this topic I came to realize that there are two extremely important factors to take into account with this self-affirmation theory. The first is the fact that no matter how often you declare that the sky is purple it will still remain blue. Although I am sure we all know a few people who will still insist that the sky is purple even when all evidence point against them. The second thing to take into account is the strength of your own belief in what you are telling yourself. You can tell yourself that you are healthy, wealthy and wise until you are blue in the face but if you do not give any credibility to the words that you are speaking your life will remain on the same path it is going. Now in writing this I am believing that you who are reading it, would in some way or another like to improve your life. I know that I do. So the precepts that I am going to be covering today are time tested and proven to bring you greater success in any area of your life that you apply them.

There is such great power in words. But remember words are really the manifestation of thoughts. And if a thought is found to be not true then its power is destroyed. And core of truth is knowledge that has been effectively tested. Then the statement that knowledge is power is indeed true. OK, now I am even starting to confuse myself. What I am trying to get us to discover is the truth. Two things govern truth. The first is that it is objective. It is the same for everyone, regardless of how one may view it or whether they believe it or not. Secondly truth sets you free from all beliefs and bondage. Truth is not based on faith. And it is the will of God that we all be saved and come into the knowledge of the truth. (1 Tim 2:1-4 NIV)  I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone--for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.

Our first step then is going to be for us to find the truth. You see because most of us have put our faith in the words of men and woman. As a young child we believed without a shadow of a doubt everything our parents said. Granted, as we got older we could discern better what was true and not but as a very young child our subconscious minds took everything as indisputable truth. So if you were ever told that you would never amount to anything you believed it. Or if you were told that you were a mistake your subconscious mind filed that away as truth. Those words had power over your life long enough! It is time that you let the truth set you free. Too often we remain unhealthy or poor or lonely or all three because of words planted in our hearts by the people who loved us the most. God wants to set you free from those lies. God wants to give you the wonderful life you deserve as His child. You have been an orphan long enough. Come out of the darkness and enjoy the light of His truth. Now before we go any further I want you to know that I am not talking about some name it, claim it, religious hype. Nor am I talking about some pop psychology quick fix. What I am uncovering for you today is spiritual truth that if applied, will draw you closer to God, and in so doing give you a fuller, happier life. The conclusion of it all is the fact that speaking the truth breaks the bondage of lies. It is when we believe a lie that we live a lie. And I do not know about you but I do not want my life to be a lie. I want to discover the truth of my potential and accomplish the good work that God has prepared for me. So then the question that we need to first overcome is how do we get from the point of believing a lie to knowing the truth? We can see how faith comes by hearing. We read in the book of Romans that faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God. Do you remember believing is Santa Clause. When someone first told you that there was no Santa it broke your heart. At first you did not believe them. After all it was your parents that told you there was such a man. Then after hearing more and more talk about there not being a Santa you began to investigate for yourself. You stayed up as late as you could on Christmas Eve to discover your Mom and Dad putting the presents under the tree. Then the next morning you see their smiling faces as they tell you that the gifts were from Santa. You smile with them for now you know the truth. Although so innocent, our faith in what our parents told us from then on was never taken with quite as much credibility. So in the above example you first had the environment of belief. In that, was the people that you gave credibility to. Over the years there was repetition of the belief. And every year the experience gave evidence of the belief. Then as you grew your environment changed and you began to give some amount of credibility to other people. They continued to repeat things that disagreed with your belief structure. And as experience further confirmed their point, you came from the believing a lie to the knowledge of the truth. That is, assuming that there is no Santa Clause.

With that you can see how environment, the people you give credence to, repetition and experience all work together to take us out of a lie and into the truth. There are basically two forces at work in our lives. The force of life and that of death. We have seen people live and we have seen people die. We have heard about eternal life and we have heard about hell. We have given credibility to the people around us and we have turned to God. The word of God is true. It has never failed a single soul. Since the time that Moses first wrote the ten commandments to Johnís last line in the book of Revelation, unto now and into the eternal tomorrows God Word rings true. Do you need answers in your life today? Turn to the word of God. Do you need help in your family life? God has the perfect plan for you. Do you desire a more stable financial future? The Word of God is exceedingly able to show you the way to prosperity. Do you need healing in your body? Godís word gives us just the right prescription. Do you need, strength to overcome yesterday, hope for tomorrow, encouragement for today? For almost four thousand years now the written word of God has proven to be the answer to all of lifeís problems. By His word the blind see, the deaf hear, the lame walk. By the word of God the dead are made alive, devils are cast out and sins are forgiven. So letís start today by believing the word of God over every other source. Letís start right now by deciding to take God at His word and believe, even if it is just for the moment, that every word of God is true. Because it would have to be, now wouldnít it? So lets start by believing the promise that He made to Joshua for ourselves. Letís read it one more time and see how it can be used for us today.  (Joshua 1:8 NIV)  Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.

Listen to the teaching of Jesus:   (Luke 6:45 KJV)  A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.

You are a child of God and He cares about you so deeply. He wants for you even more then you want for yourself. Let the difference begin in your heart. Trust God with your entire being. Open up your heart and ask Jesus to come in. Let Him fill any and every void in your life. Accept His death upon the cross as full payment of your sins and know that as God has risen Him from the dead, and as He lives today so can you. No longer living unto death but eternal life begins right now. It begins with the confession of your mouth. If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the grave you will be saved. There is power in your words. The power of death and the power of life. Words can encourage or discourage. They can be uplifting or depressing. Words can cause you to either win or lose, bring victory or defeat. They can persuade or dissuade, build or destroy, gladden or sadden, settle or upset, sooth or irritate, receive or reject.   When the Bible talks of meditating upon the word it means to read it out loud to yourself. Repeating it over and over lowly to yourself. Meditate on the word of God day and night. Pray the Word of God, talk to others about the Word of God, teach your children and grandchildren the Word of God. Do you want to experience a noticeable change in your life? Start by looking at yourself in the mirror and telling yourself the truth from Gods word. Quote scripture to yourself. Do you know how Jesus defeated satan in the wilderness? By quoting the scriptures. It is written. But remember satan knows scripture too, so do not be deceived. Get into a strong growing Christian environment, give credibility to the word of God, and Repeat the word of God over and over to yourself. Let your experience bring confirmation to your affirmations of faith in God.
