Blessings and Curses

Prayers and Spells

Scripture: (Acts 26:16-18 KJV) But rise, and stand upon thy feet: for I have appeared unto thee for this purpose, to make thee a minister and a witness both of these things which thou hast seen, and of those things in the which I will appear unto thee;
Delivering thee from the people, and from the Gentiles, unto whom now I send thee, To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me.

Today's message is about freedom. It is about power. It is about coming to a right understanding of the consequences of our actions. it is about the forgiveness of our sins and it is about the resurrection power of God which breaks the yoke of bondage. It is about breakthrough and it is about going forward. We start with a look at the dramatic transformation of one man who changed the world. This was a man who hated The Way. That was what the Christians first called themselves. To Saul they were criminals perverting the law of God. You see Saul knew the law and I believe that he sincerely desired to please God by caring out the letter of the law and bringing these heretics to justice.

Lets leave Saul for a minute and go back to the Old Testament and look at another man who also had a huge impact on the world as we know it. I am talking about Jacob. He was the conniving son of Isaac and the grandson of Abraham. We join his story on the way back from his father in laws place. He had slipped away in the night and Laben was coming after him.

 (Genesis 31:26-28 KJV) And Laban said to Jacob, What hast thou done, that thou hast stolen away unawares to me, and carried away my daughters, as captives taken with the sword?
Wherefore didst thou flee away secretly, and steal away from me; and didst not tell me, that I might have sent thee away with mirth, and with songs, with tabret, and with harp? And hast not suffered me to kiss my sons and my daughters? thou hast now done foolishly in so doing.

Now if you know the story Jacob had been at his father in laws place for twenty years being cheated and used. Jacobs one love was his wife Rachel. He worked for fourteen years for Laben to win her hand in marriage. To save a lot of time and by pass a lot of Jacob's family history, let's just say that in a way Jacob got a little payback for all of his own deceitfulness.
Jacob was now attempting to listen to the heart of God and do what was right. He was going back to his home and try to make things right. The real problem occurred without much notice. In fact Jacob did not know at all, but Rachel, the woman he loved had stolen her father's graven images that he worshiped and was hiding them in her saddle. When Laben accuses Jacob of stealing them Jacob becomes angered and curses the person who stole them not knowing that he was inadvertently condemning his own dear wife.

 (Genesis 31:32 KJV) With whomsoever thou findest thy gods, let him not live: before our brethren discern thou what is thine with me, and take it to thee. For Jacob knew not that Rachel had stolen them.

It was not long from then that Rachel died giving birth to her son.

I want to just take one minute to reiterate a truth found in proverbs. (Proverbs 18:21 KJV) Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.

I was asked recently about the power of the occult and witchcraft. Someone asked if it was real. They wanted to know if casting spells and proclaiming curses really could hold power in this world. The unfortunate truth is that there is a dark side which at this time does have power upon this world. I do not in any way want to go off the deep end here because this in not the point that God has for you today but it is a truth that you must know and be aware of. You my friend are fighting in the unseen war and your soul and soul of billions of people weigh in the balance. Do not be fooled by people making light of the subject. The best way to keep your enemy from being ready for an attack is to continue to threaten them without actually doing anything until their guard is completely down. God has shown us time and time again the power of darkness being manifested in signs and wonders. Look at the Pharaoh's magicians duplicating the wonders which God performed through Moses. Look at who Saul consulted in Endor about the Philistines warring against him. (1 Samuel 28:7 KJV) Then said Saul unto his servants, Seek me a woman that hath a familiar spirit, that I may go to her, and inquire of her. And his servants said to him, Behold, there is a woman that hath a familiar spirit at Endor.

Now I would not be doing my job if I did not warn you right now to stay away from the practices of the occult. I am not just talking about outright witchcraft, which there is a lot of in this country today, but I am talking about the twinkling lights of revelation that entice you to look into the eyes of the dark beast. I am talking about the stupid horoscopes and psychotic network and I am talking about the weirdo who does the crossing over program on the sci-fi channel. If you are watching that stuff and indulging yourself and your family in these practices then know that you also will reap the whirlwind of their deception. The sad part is that some people who are God fearing, born again Christians fall for these enticements and wonder why they are not experiencing the fullness of the joy of the LORD. Stop it! You need to know the reality of the danger of walking outside the perfect will of God. Come on! God has got a wonderful plan for your life and has prepared you fully for the fulfillment of it. It is up to you now. He gives you the free will. It is your choice, the blessing or the curse. (Deuteronomy 30:19 KJV) I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live:

Now let's go back to Saul. There he is on the road to Damascus going after anyone who calls upon the name of Jesus to bring them back to Jerusalem in chains when he has a real live encounter with the King of kings and the LORD of lords and discovers that His name is Jesus. That was his breakthrough. Saul was changed to Paul and he became the vessel used by God to carry the good news of God's love to the whole world. He never turned back after that encounter on that road. He knew the truth and was willing to die for it. He was beaten, shipwrecked, hunted ,hated and stoned but he never stopped telling the story of the breakthrough that he had on that road. Saul intended on bringing a curse to the people who were to become known as Christians instead he blessed them and was a blessing to them.

And what about Jacob? Well, He wrestled with God one night and was forever changed. From that one encounter on his way home he became Israel and the world received the blessing through Him. He may have unknowingly cursed the woman that he loved but from the place of her death the savior was born.  (Genesis 35:19 KJV) And Rachel died, and was buried in the way to Ephrath, which is Bethlehem.

You can move your life from the curse to the blessing today. You can once again or maybe for the first time experience the reality of being a new creation in Christ Jesus. You can break the passionate bonds of fulfilling the desires of the flesh and reap the eternal fruit of the spirit. It all starts with a prayer. It all starts with you being willing to renounce the hold that satan has upon you. I guess first you have to be aware of that hold. I pray that you know any and every area of your life that the enemy is clinging onto. Renounce and repent. Decide right now that there is a better way to live and with the help of God and the mighty movement of His Holy Spirit in you life you can and will overcome the world. John the Baptist said that we should bring fruit worthy of repentance. No more excuses. No more rationalizing. No more lies. Right now let's turn our lives over to God, accept Jesus as not only our savior but as truly or LORD and serve Him with all our hearts. Go after your breakthrough as you seek an encounter with God and not only be changed yourself but go out and change the world. To God be the Glory. In Jesus name Amen and Amen.
