The Holy Spirit And You

(Acts 11:16 NIV) Then I remembered what the Lord had said: 'John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.'

Today I want us to look at the person of the Holy Spirit and discover the reality of His presence and power in our lives. Who is the Holy Spirit and how does His presence in your life make a difference? The first thing I need us to understand is that the Holy Spirit is a person. The Holy Spirit is not simply an attribute of God the Father and Jesus the Son. The Holy Spirit is God the Holy Spirit. Without getting into a discussion about the trinity today we are going to get a better understanding of who the Holy Spirit is and How a close and personal relationship, being baptized with the Holy Spirit, can and does make all the difference in the world.

You know, I have often wondered why so many Christians just never really seemed to get it. It seems as if they were inoculated with Christianity. Like being given a flew shot, they got just a little bit of it so as to not get the real thing. Now, please understand I am not talking about fanaticism. Being filled with the Holy Spirit is not about running around and jumping up and down and basically making anyone who does not understand what you are doing think that you have gone crazy. I am talking about the fire that burns within your bones, the love and passion for God. I am talking about  real Christianity that moves mountains and eternally changes lives. I look at great men like Billy Graham and D. L. Moody and Charles Spurgeon and I see their passion and love for God so clearly it is as if you can sense the Holy Spirit's presence even in their writings. The thing we need to understand is that the same Holy Spirit which empowers them is available to us.

Now before I go any further I have to get personal and talk about my own relationship with the Holy Spirit. The first thing that I know about myself is that I am a sinner in need of a savior. And I fall short every day. Some days real short. Yet I know my salvation is secure for noting can separate me from the love of God. I can willfully walk away, and in those times that I stray, I know it and the consequences are strongly felt. Likewise on those far too few occasions when I am walking in the Spirit, I know that, deep within my soul, and the physical consequences are manifested.

So we can not be mislead in the knowledge of our salvation, and the realization of our relationship with the Holy Spirit. For our salvation comes through Jesus.

(Acts 4:12 NIV) Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved."

And power is given unto us by the Holy Spirit.

(Acts 1:8 NIV) But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."

OK, let's start by building the foundation of who the Holy Spirit is. I love the Holy Spirit's name in Hebrew; Ruach Godesh. We first see the Holy Spirit right from the beginning.

(Genesis 1:1&2 NIV) In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.

God said let us make man in our image. Three in one. God the Father, God the Son, and God the holy Spirit. Read the account of Abraham's meeting with the tri-une LORD

(Gen 18:2-10NIV) Abraham looked up and saw three men standing nearby. When he saw them, he hurried from the entrance of his tent to meet them and bowed low to the ground. "If I have found favor in your eyes, my lord, do not pass your servant by. Let a little water be brought, and then you may all wash your feet and rest under this tree. Let me get you something to eat, so you can be refreshed and then go on your way--now that you have come to your servant." "Very well," they answered, "do as you say." So Abraham hurried into the tent to Sarah. "Quick," he said, "get three seahs of fine flour and knead it and bake some bread." Then he ran to the herd and selected a choice, tender calf and gave it to a servant, who hurried to prepare it. He then brought some curds and milk and the calf that had been prepared, and set these before them. While they ate, he stood near them under a tree. "Where is your wife Sarah?" they asked him. "There, in the tent," he said. Then the LORD said, "I will surely return to you about this time next year, and Sarah your wife will have a son." Now Sarah was listening at the entrance to the tent, which was behind him.

I had us read that to emphasis the personhood (is that a word) of the Holy Spirit. Jesus Himself speaks to us about the Holy Spirit as a man.

(Luke 12:12 NIV) for the Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what you should say."

(John 16:7 KJV) Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.

I could go on and on demonstrating the person of the Holy Spirit, but what difference does it make? First we need to know that He is, then we need to know about Him, and the more we know about Him, the closer relationship we can have with Him and the more we are going to experience His power in our lives. So let's take a look fist of all at some of His names. He is called the Comforter, The Spirit of Truth, The Spirit of Glory, The Power Of The Highest, Spirit of Knowledge, Understanding, Wisdom......

The names of the Holy Spirit describes for us who He is and how He functions in our lives. Yet still, many people know this yet have not that fire locked up within their bones. How do we get this baptism of the Holy Spirit and will it make us weird? I think that may be one of the main reason's that many people do not seek it, because they have heard of so many wacko accounts of people loosing control. God does not give us the Spirit of confusion, but of power and love and a sound mind. (2 Timothy 1:7) The Holy Spirit is knowledge, and wisdom and understanding and a comforter. He is truth and shining glory, He is the Power of the Highest. It is with Him and by Him all things are possible to us. It was the baptism of the Holy Spirit that turned Peter from a back-wooded fisherman into the first leader of the Church.  It was the Holy Spirit that turned Saul from a murderous Pharisee into the Man of God called to spread the Gospel unto the ends of the Earth. It was the Holy Spirit that took a washed up beach bum into the Man of God who writes these words today. It is the Holy Spirit that continues to lead me, teach me, convict me and pour the grace of God upon me. It is the Holy Spirit that burns within my bones making it impossible for me not to express the love of God to everyone everywhere through Jesus Christ the LORD. It is the Holy Spirit that makes the difference, every difference.

So what difference does it make? Well, before you get it, that might be a good question, but once you've got, it you know the difference. I guess the most important question now would be do you want it? I know, I heard it from so many and you haven't even read it yet, you already got it. SOOO... then are you maybe a little bit like me and can't get enough of it? Do you want more of the goodness of God. Do you really want the Holy Spirit's power in you life to a fuller extent. I think sometimes we let it slip until we feel we need it, then we call out to God and He never leaves us nor forsakes us. But do you want it? Know first His purpose.

(Acts 1:8 NIV) But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."

(John 14:26 NIV) But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.

It is all about Jesus. It is not about me and what I can get out of it. It is about how God can use me to reveal Jesus to you. It is about how God can powerfully use you to real His love to those He sends your way. It is about God's love for His Children. It is about being bold for the sake of the LORD. It is about standing up for what is right because it is right. It is about the truth. It is about time we were baptized afresh in the wonderful power of the Holy Spirit. So I ask you again; do you want it? It starts with you accepting Jesus Christ as LORD and Savior. Accepting God's forgiveness of your sins which He paid the price for upon that cross. It starts with you realizing the great price that was paid because He loves you. Because you are highly favored of the LORD. It starts with you asking for it in prayer.

(Luke 11:13 NIV) If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!"

Now, pray with me for the out pouring. Pray with me for revival. Pray with me for a new beginning. Pray with me for power from on high. Pray with me believing and let us be filled to the overflowing with the presence and the power of the Holy Spirit of God.

Father God; I am a sinner. I confess my sins to you and repent of them. You know my heart LORD. I ask you LORD Jesus to come into my heart. Take the center place in my life and forgive me of all my sins. Create in me a clean heart oh LORD. Make me a new creation in Christ Jesus. Give me a real hope in a better tomorrow as I put my trust in you. And now Father God I ask in the name of Jesus for the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Fill me up LORD, have your way in my life. Plunge me into the depths of your love. Use me Oh, LORD, use me for your glory. Make me an instrument. Make me a vessel of honor. Make me yours. Thank you LORD. I accept it. I ask for your Holy Spirit and I accept it. In Jesus name I praise you LORD. In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit I praise you. Amen and Amen and Amen. So let it be!!!!!!!!

It might not happen all at once, it might not happen in an instant, but be assured it will happen. Ask and you will receive, knock and the door will be open. Seek with all your heart and God will show you great and wonderful things that you never dreamt possible. Write me and let me know how God is moving and working in your life. And never forget you are loved and highly favored of the LORD. Be blessed.
