The Road To Bethlehem Part II ( The Relevance of Prophecy)

(Isaiah 48:3-5 KJV)  I have declared the former things from the beginning; and they went forth out of my mouth, and I shewed them; I did them suddenly, and they came to pass. Because I knew that thou art obstinate, and thy neck is an iron sinew, and thy brow brass; I have even from the beginning declared it to thee; before it came to pass I shewed it thee: lest thou shouldest say, Mine idol hath done them, and my graven image, and my molten image, hath commanded them.

I talked last week about how much I desire for each of my messages to be relevant to our every day lives. I also expressed how in the past I would avoid much of prophecy because I could not find the relevance in it. Today I want to uncover three area where prophecy can be applied to our lives and by doing so we can live better lives, even the abundant life that Christ came to give us.

The first reason for prophecy is to reveal the truth of who God is.

The second is like I talked about last week, to give you confidence in God’s promises.

Thirdly to give us a “heads up” as to what is going to happen in the not so distant future.

With these three benefits of prophecy we should be able to apply what we learn today in different ways to give ourselves a better tomorrow.

Let me begin with some probabilities;

Professor Emeritus of Science at Westmont College, Peter Stoner, has calculated the probability of one man fulfilling the major prophecies made concerning the Messiah.

After examining only eight different prophecies (Idem, 106), they conservatively estimated that the chance of one man fulfilling all eight prophecies was one in 10^17.

100,000,000,000,000,000

To illustrate how large the number 10^17 IS (a figure with 17 zeros), Stoner gave this illustration :

“If you mark one of ten tickets, and place all the tickets in a hat, and thoroughly stir them, and then ask a blindfolded man to draw one, his chance of getting the right ticket is one in ten. Suppose that we take 10^17 silver dollars and lay them on the face of Texas. They'll cover all of the state two feet deep. Now mark one of these silver dollars and stir the whole mass thoroughly, all over the state. Blindfold a man and tell him that he can travel as far as he wishes, but he must pick up one silver dollar and say that this is the right one. What chance would he have of getting the right one? Just the same chance that the prophets would've had of writing these eight prophecies and having them all come true in any one man, from their day to the present time, providing they wrote them in their own wisdom”

Now that was with just eight fulfilled prophecies. With only 48 the odds would be 10^157

1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000

Now, you can begin to see the absurdity of this, especially when in reality this number  can be taken up to 109 prophecies that could have only been fulfilled by one man, Jesus. And if you think the math is absurd, how do you think I feel about people who still after seeing it in black and white, choose not to believe? If you go to the website you will find a list of 365 prophecies concerning Jesus attached to this message. 365 and that is not all of them……

I believe that perhaps the main reason for God to provide us with so much convincing prophecy is exactly what Isaiah tells us above:

(Isaiah 48:3 CEV)  Long ago I announced what was going to be, then without warning, I made it happen.

(Isaiah 48:4 CEV)  I knew you were stubborn and hardheaded.

Even in the midst of overwhelming mathematical evidence, people choose to keep their heads in the sand and the scales remain over their eyes so they will not see the truth of God’s love for them.

But that simply covers our first reason for prophecy. It is the second that I believe, we as Christians need to get a better realization of. If what God says is true, then what God says is true. Let’s use my juggling ability for an example. If I told you that I can juggle a flaming torch, a sword and a rubber chicken, even if at first you did not believe me, but then I demonstrated it to you and you were amazed; when I tell you that I can juggle three balls you should have no trouble believing it. In fact you should expect it from me.

If you know a mechanic who works on cars every day, tearing them apart and putting them back together from top to bottom, you would have no problem expecting him to be able to change your oil.

Hopefully you get the idea. God is exceedingly, abundantly able to do far more then you could ever ask or even think to ask. Your eyes have not seen nor your ears heard, neither has it even come to your wildest imagination the great things that God has in store for you.

God does not simply predict things in the future, He brings them about. God is not some great psychic, he is the great architect. God is not simply guessing the future, he is declaring what he will do. God is not just hoping for a thing He is manifesting it.

Now, with that knowledge clear within us; we can look at what God has declared for our lives with a new assurance. When we come to the knowledge that nothing is impossible to God and that all things are working together for the good of those who love Him, then we can stop expecting to be defeated and a broken people and start living like the children of the King of Kings that we have been chosen to be.

This past Friday night I had the opportunity to go see Joel Olsteen in Tampa. His message was on waiting with expectation.

One great reality of our lives is that we will get pretty much what we expect out of life. In other words you are going to do, be and get just about what you really expect yourself to do, be and get. If you expect to become a college graduate and have a great job with a good income and a nice home and loving family then, most likely you will achieve just that. If on the other hand you expect yourself to barely get out of high school, work dead end jobs, scrape by and have a rollercoaster of a ride with your relationships then that is also what you will achieve. The two key words to both of these outcomes are the words expect and achieve.

In order for us to accomplish anything in our lives, whether it is greatness or defeat, we are going to have to achieve, or bring about or realize each of these outcomes ourselves. I guess what I am saying is that you bring about in your life what you expect your life to be.

So in order for your life to have any positive change take place at all you have to first change what you believe is possible. You have to expect great things for yourself and from yourself. You have to know that God is on your side and that you are indeed blessed and highly favored of Him.  You have to increase your faith in who God is and what He wants for your life and His ability to bring it about.

Now for some that is going to take a lot of faith. And how do we get that faith. Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God. Look what the Lord has done. Look what the Lord desires for your life. Look at how much He loves you. Look at his ability to move heaven and earth for your benefit.

To tie this into our message today, let God give you an example oh how to achieve what you expect. The first thing you do is to declare it. Then you declare it again, and again and again.

What is going to be the first thing that happens when you declare something big? Someone is going to try to shoot you down. Someone is always going to give you a reason or two or twenty why you can’t do it.

So what do you have to do? You have to decide who’s report you are going to believe. Are you going to believe the report of the nay-Sayers, or are you going to believe the report of the LORD?

(Isaiah 53:1 KJV)  Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the LORD revealed?

Three things I want you to see today. First and foremost I want you to know, beyond a shadow of a doubt that Jesus Christ is LORD. I want you to know the truth that there is a God and He loves you with an everlasting, never-ending love. If you simply put your trust in Him, He will come into your heart and forgive you of all your sins and turn your life around, giving you purpose and direction and filling you with His Holy Spirit.

The second thing I want you to get from today’s math lesson, is how much you can really count on the LORD. He will provide your every need according to His riches in Glory!!!!

(Philippians 4:19 KJV)  But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

Then thirdly I hope you know that you do not have forever to get things right with the LORD. Soon and very soon; no one knows the hour or the day, but the fields are ready….

Right now you have only one choice to make, and that choice will determine the rest of your eternity. Is Jesus who He said He is or is he a liar, lunatic, or conman? You can no longer say that you do not know? It is yes or no!

If you do put your faith in Jesus then not only is your name written down in the book of life, but every promise in His word is for you! God wants to bless your socks off. Stop listening to the people who don’t know the truth when it is right in their face. God has got a plan and a purpose for your life. You can expect great things. You can achieve great things. Press forward to your high calling. Keep pressing forward. Keep pressing forward……

Remember; “If you shoot for the moon and miss, you are still amongst the stars.”

God bless you!
